Destination Thailand Visa (DTV)

Expert assistance with US visa applications for tourism, business, education, and employment

The Destination Thailand Visa is a long-term tourist visa, meaning you are not eligible for a work permit and can’t work for a Thai company. This visa is instead geared toward digital nomads and remote workers who make their living online. The DTV enables you to make extended stops in Thailand to enjoy the country long-term while still earning income. The Thai government refers to this as a “Workcation.”

This visa is also intended for individuals who wish to participate in long-term “Thai Soft Power Activities,” such as Muay Thai courses, Thai cooking classes, sports training, medical treatment, seminars, and music festivals. However, the government has not yet released details on which specific activities qualify or which organizations are approved to conduct activities eligible for this visa. At this time, the easiest way to qualify for the DTV is to be self-employed or work remotely for a foreign company.

The DTV is valid for 5 years, but each entry into Thailand allows a stay of only 180 days before you must leave. The good news is that it is a multiple-entry visa, so you can freely enter and exit Thailand to avoid exceeding the stay limit.

Alternatively, you can extend your 180-day entry for an additional 180 days, allowing you to stay in Thailand for nearly a full year without leaving. This extension must be applied for at Thai Immigration, and an additional immigration fee will apply.

Proof of Finances

Although the eligibility requirements are relatively lenient compared to some other long-term Thai visas, the financial asset requirement is somewhat high. You must demonstrate that you have 500,000 THB in liquid assets to show that you can support yourself while living in Thailand.

Family Option

If you’ve got dependents to bring to Thailand with you, the DTV provides a solution. Legal spouses and dependent children can get their own dependent DTVs to match yours so that you don’t have to arrange separate visas. Keep in mind though that each dependent visa costs 10,000 THB as well, and you must provide proof of your relationships.

Where to Apply for the DTV

You can apply for the DTV in person at a Royal Thai Embassy or Consulate, just as you would for a standard Thai tourist or non-immigrant visa. Alternatively, you can apply online through Thailand’s E-visa Website. Note that E-visa services are not available in all countries, so check with your embassy.

You CANNOT apply for this from within Thailand. You will need to travel outside of Thailand to apply at an embassy or consulate. It should be possible to apply from Thailand’s neighboring countries, including Laos, Cambodia, and Malaysia. Keep in mind that your visa will still be issued based on the approval of the local embassy officer, so if you want the maximum chance for approval, consider applying from your home country.

Important Things to Keep in Mind When Considering the DTV2

Taxes

In late 2023, Thailand’s tax policy was amended. Now, anyone who stays in Thailand for at least 180 days out of a calendar year is considered a tax resident by the Thai government. This means you must pay Thai income tax on the income you earn for that year, regardless of where it came from or when you brought it into Thailand.

So, if you come to work in Thailand on the DTV and stay for 180 days or more, you are liable to pay Thai income tax, unless you already pay income tax in another country that has a double-tax agreement with Thailand.

How Our Team Can Assist

Our team is here to guide you every step of the way. From understanding visa requirements and preparing your documentation to offering personalized advice based on your situation, we ensure the process is smooth and stress-free. Whether you’re planning a short stay or a long-term move, we provide the support you need to make informed decisions with confidence.

As the DTV is a long-term tourist visa, it does not provide the same rights and privileges as a non-immigrant visa (such as a business, marriage, or LTR visa). For example, obtaining permanent residency in Thailand requires holding a non-immigrant visa and residing in the country for a specific period. Time spent in Thailand on a DTV does not count toward this requirement, so if your goal is permanent residency, this visa is not suitable.
